Words to be sung in the Appalachian style

Oh, brother, are you going
down to the Jordan?
Swing low, swing low o'er dark rolling water
bend low, bend low and listen to the river saying
"we shall not be parted, our water is the sorrow
and tears of all those who have ever
mourned a poor departing soul"

And did you hope to cross on dry land
did you hope to walk atop that water
and did you hope for a chariot of fire
did you hope to see your Jesus there?

And don't you know your poor soul can't cause the water
to part, to part, it's sinews are the sorrows of all the world
bow down, bow down your head, poor sinner,
bend down into that dark flowing water.
